Argentine `Free Tango` Workshop
A `Buffalo Tango` sponsored event.
Tango is by its nature interpretive and improvisational. ~ Traditional teaching techniques for this dance include the memorization of patterns or `figures`. ~ This can be likened to learning a language by memorizing common phrases and cliche`s, which limits greatly one`s ability to communicate and create with words. ~ This workshop will introduce and make fluid all of the basic elements of Argentine tango, leading to advanced possibilities such as ganchos, voleos, barrida, sacada, etc. ~ No choreography or figures will be taught, and those dancers who are familiar with tango will work to deconstruct learned habit and rote, repetitive dancing. ~ You will learn that Tango is a language of subjects and verbs. ~ From this foundation creativity in the dance increases many-fold, and you will enter into the poetry-making possibilities of the dance.
Please wear very comfortable clothes, such as loose exercise gear, including thick wool or cushioned socks. ~ You may bring shoes for the final dance if you prefer, but the class will be conducted in socks so no shoes are necessary. ~ Should anyone have physical difficulty with their feet and need more support, ballet shoes or light, flat- soled trainers are recommended. ~ Also, for those who are music lovers, please feel free to bring some of your favorite music on CD, with one request - it should be fun, danceable, but not Tango music! ~ Be prepared for a relaxed, fun and easy-going adventurous evening.
The workshop will be given by Jenne Magno...
