Floyd considers himself an Argentine Tango ‘purist’. From his first awareness of Tango, which he says is not just a dance, he has been obsessed and posessed by it. ~ He has been doing Argentine Tango since 1995.
His instructors are some of the most well known in the world. Studying in person with those on the list (link) provided.., as well as many others, via their videos and other sources of instruction and information. ~ As his wife developed back problems Floyd had to slow his ‘physical’ dancing but his love and intense passion for it continued. ~ Over this partnerless period, and WNY being the ‘vast Tango wasteland’ that it was..., he continued reading and viewing Tango instruction alone. ~ He devoured everything, thought much, and resolved the many loose ends. ~ In the end he developed the methods he uses today. ~ Tango, as it needs to be taught, learned, and danced.
It is this danceless period that Floyd attributes most of his present, and very clear understanding of Tango. ~ He feels he has learned it ‘from the inside out’. ~ By going through a personal immersion.., as the young in Argentina before they actually come to Tango themselves on the Tango floor.
Floyd believes in maintaining the way Tango came to be. The original totally improvisational Tango. ~ The reason it has lasted and became so popular around the world. ~ He is very much into teaching the lead as both partners need to feel and understand it. ~ After all he reasons, the ladies never came to practice in the beginning. ~ They were busy... ~ But they were still instantly able to follow anything the men lead them into on the floor, the very first time.
So, after 12 years of study and experience Floyd has developed a unique style of passing on what he has learned. ~ One which conveys his sense of ‘immersion’ into that original Argentine Tango community. ~ How Tango was developed, learned and danced back then..!
Floyd brought Tango to WNY. He first worked at growing Tango in WNY in the mid to late 90’s. ~ But it was too early in the resurgence for Buffalo to want to learn. ~ He tried again in 2005 and this time it took hold. ~ In 2-1/2 years Floyd held 27 months of weekly dances in a row and brought in a large number of workshops held by major Tango names. ~ Not to mention organizing Tango events and Festivals involving the Albright Knox, the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra, Art Park, imported Tango music groups, Tango Art, and other teriffic Tango things. ~ WNY and Buffalo..., previously known as a ‘vast Tango wasteland’, were brought to being a new and energetic Tango community. People are now doing ochos where they use to do zeros...
Floyd is dedicated to Argentine Tango. Seeing it danced right, and not just ‘pretty’, is his only goal...
